-서론-
현대사회는 경제발전에 따른 생활수준과 의학의 눈부신 발달로 평균수명이 연장됨에 따라
중년기와 중년 이후의 삶에 대한 중요성과 관심이 증가하고 있다. 우리나라의 경우 남성의
평균수명은 69.5세이고 여성의 평균수명은 76.6세(통계청, 1995)임을 감안한다면 중년기 이후
의 삶이 전체의 절반 가량을 차지하고 있다. 이처럼 생의 주기에 있어 많은 비중을 차지하
고 있는 중년기가 20세기 중엽 이전까지만 해도 개념적으로나 실증적으로 거의 모든 분야에
서 도외시되었고 주로 관심의 초점은 생의 주기에서 초기단계에 집중되어 왔었다. 따라서
현대사회를 이끌어가고 있는 기성세대에 해당되는 중년기 인구에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정
이다.
흔히 중년기는 인생의 전반에서 후반으로 바뀌어 가는 전환점으로서 이해되며 성숙기 혹
은 갱년기로 묘사되기도 한다(전산초와 최영희, 1985) .여성의 인생주기 중 중년기는 신체적
으로 서서히 모든 기관의 기능 감퇴와 노화가 나타나며 호르몬 변화와 함께 폐경이 오게 되
는데 이는 중년기여성이 일반적으로 경험하는 자연적인 현상으로 생식기에서 비생식기로 전
환되는 하나의 사건이며 정상적인 성장발달의 한 과정이다(권숙희 등, 1996).

This study was conducted to compare depression level and identify the variables that
associated with the depression of the middle-aged women in the menopause. The study
subjects included 289 mothers of college students(4 colleges in 1 university) in Taegu
City whose age was between 40 and 59 years old. The instrument used in this study as
Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) developed by Beck(1978) and translated into Korean by
Lee(1981). The Cronbach alpha index for the reliability of BDI in this study subjects
was 0.82. There were significant differences in the age (p<0.001), marriage period(p<0.001), the number of children(p<0.001), support of spouse(p<0.01) and health status (p<0.05) by menopausal stage.
Depression level was higher for the women in the menopausal stage than the women
in the premenopausal and postmenopausal stages (F=.35, p=.0139). Menopausal stage was associated with the depression level when all the other variables that were significantly associated with depression level were controlled by the ANCOVA (F=4.97, p=0.0076). Seventeen percent of variance of depression level was explained by the support of spouse and health status for the women at the premenopausal stage, 25% was explained by the satisfaction of marriage and family income for the women at the menopausal stage, and 20% was explained by the health status and family income for the women at the postmenopausal stage.
